Foremost means “first” or “at the leading point” and was named by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1913 when the railroad was brought from Lethbridge. Once established as a township by the Alberta Government, the entrepreneurial nature of Foremost’s residents became apparent. Within months, a number of businesses opened including general stores, pool hall, restaurant, carpenter shop, drug store, livery barn, hardware store, the start of two grain elevators and four residences. Soon, Town Hall and a post office were built.

Today, the entrepreneurial spirit lives on with numerous businesses lining Main Street, providing residents with convenience and affordability. Recreation facilities include an ice arena, swimming pool, curling rink and ball diamonds. Every June, the residents hold a parade, rodeo and tough truck competitions. Hockey is a big sport in Foremost, with the local team aptly named the Foremost Flyers. Foremost School has not only garnered a reputation for academics, but also for its long history of winning sports teams. The Foremost Falcons and Forettes have won many provincial titles in basketball, volleyball, track and field and cross country running. A strong arts community is also evident in community theatre productions and the school dramatic arts department.
