MULCHING AND COMPOSTING AS AN ALTERNATIVE

MULCHING:

Mulching is becoming increasingly popular, due to its convenience and the health benefits it provides to the lawn.  A mulch blade or lawn mower chops the clippings down to a fine mulch which is then returned to the lawn.  As the tiny grass clippings decompose rapidly, the lawn has a cleaner appearance.  Nitrogen and other essential nutrients are fed back into the grass roots, resulting in a thicker and greener lawn without fertilizing or feeding.

For best results when mulching, the rule of thumb is not to cut off more than one-third of the grass length.  For optimum results, do not cut below 30-40 mm and cutting frequently is recommended.  Mulching is also beneficial to help maintain soil balance and moisture, thus less water is required for healthy grass.

The Village of Foremost requests the public to consider mulching their grass rather than bagging for transfer to the refuse site. This would save on garbage volumes in both hauling and land fill space and also promote a healthy and happy yard.

COMPOSTING:

The Village of Foremost has set aside an area for the composting of leaves and grass. It is located at the Industrial Park, north of the new County Shop, adjacent to the large dirt piles, use access road at east end.

Please follow the following system when utilizing the composting area:

*No shrub or tree trimmings or branches

Only leaves and grass clippings

Plastic Bags are to be dumped out and if discarded, put into barrel next to composting area

No garbage, household or otherwise

No metal

Biodegradablebags are permissible

Your cooperation in maintaining thiscomposting site is appreciated.

REMINDER– SEWER SYSTEM

Dueto past sewer problems, please do not dispose of egg shells, cooking grease, cooking oil, feminine hygiene products, condoms or baby wipes through the sewer system. As well, it has been foundthat overuse of liquid fabric softeners and powder laundry detergents causebuild-up in sewer lines, so please keep this in mind when using these items.

There are to be NO oilproducts dumped into shop floor drains or pits, and please make sure thesedrains are clean so they do not overflow mud and sand into the sewer system.

There has been several incidentsof a sand and heavy sludge blocking the mainline caused by careless dumpinginto the sewer system from the Industrial Park. We will continue to monitor thelevels and effluent from this area, this is a very serious issue. Please becareful and vigilant of what is going down the sewer mainline at all times.
