A History of Innovation and Community Spirit
Foremost, meaning “first” or “at the leading point,” was named by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1913 when the railroad extended from Lethbridge. Shortly after being established as a township by the Alberta Government, the entrepreneurial drive of Foremost’s residents quickly became evident.
Within just months, a variety of businesses sprang up — including general stores, a pool hall, restaurants, a carpenter shop, a drug store, a livery barn, a hardware store, and the beginnings of two grain elevators. Essential community buildings like the Town Hall and post office were also constructed, laying the foundation for a thriving village.
Did You Know?
Foremost is the proud home of the Xenoceratops, a unique dinosaur species discovered near the village in 1958.
This incredible find represents a new species of dinosaur, estimated to be 80 million years old — making it the oldest known large-bodied horned dinosaur discovered in Canada!
The Xenoceratops was an impressive creature, measuring 6 metres long (20 feet) and weighing over 2 tonnes (4,500 lbs).
This fascinating discovery connects our community to Alberta’s rich paleontological history and adds a truly prehistoric chapter to Foremost’s story!
